Artist Statement
Photography as an observational technology has become a foundational presence in our digital-media saturated contemporary society. The design of the systems through which we sense, measure, communicate and consume visual information must be considered as political questions. Examining how the medium functions at a fundamental level shines a metaphorical light on its role and function in larger social, technological and political contexts. Defining the medium expansively, I bend and remix my process to engage photography's telematic interactions with/in society.
Michael is a 2023 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Digital/Electronic Arts from The New York Foundation for the Arts.
