John Sypal has been photographing other peoples’ cameras on the streets of Tokyo–usually only film cameras. It’s sort of akin to several other photographers who have photographed darkrooms or the photographer who recently shot the darkroom trays of various photographers. It’s a lot about the gear, but a little about something else–maybe it’s the aura suggested by Araki as he’s quoted in the blog’s right hand column. Sometimes a project can be simple and straightforward.

Appropos to one of our threads of conversation on Monday, here is Susan Barnett’s <a href="http://sabarnett.com/gallery_shirt_1_parade.html" target="blank>Not In Your Face project. You don’t have to be in your face or invasive or confrontational to make compelling photographs on the street. I think these photographs are very cool. Also, her distinct projects are good examples of the kind of projects you should be thinking about for your self-assignments. Notice also the statements describing the intent of the work. I don’t think these are great statements, but they do convey a context for how to read the photographs.

There were two assignments given this past Monday:

• Go to the intersection of 57th Street and 5th Avenue, shoot 75 pictures or more at that intersection. You may shoot from anywhere at the intersection within a half block in any direction. As always, bring in a selection of 5 to 15 work prints for a critique on July 12th.

• I want everyone to brainstorm ten or more ideas for your self assigned project. You can let yourself go crazy on the brainstorming, but be sure that some of your ideas are accessible. From out of the brainstorming, choose one project that you are going to pursue through the rest of this class. Write four to five sentences describing why this project is interesting to you and how you might/will approach shooting it. E-mail both the brainstorm list and this short paragraph to me by Monday the 5th for me to make comments.
