Some good ideas there.

Your first one I like best. This is an idea that you can limit in a useful way for the short timeframe of this class but potentially expand over time. As you noted, there are a couple of ways to approach this photographically. When you say deadpan, I take that to mean in a direct somewhat formal way in a manner stylistically similar to Atget or Evans. Alternately, this could be a form of photographic typology; Bernd and Hilla Becher are the archetypical photographers in this mold.

Your second and third ideas are good too. Each provides a structure within with to work by limiting the location but leaves plenty of room for exploration of content and form.

I'll be interested to see what you bring in tomorrow.

One idea is to shoot the places of worship of new immigrant groups. Start with what I know best, the Buddhist temples and churches, sometimes of the storefront variety, sometimes a "takeover" of an existing traditional structure (eg a Catholic church that served mainly European immigrants a century ago and now serve mainly East Asian immigrants), in Chinatown and elsewhere in NYC. Either deadpan style strictly from the outside/street, or more "people-centered" inside, outside, and around.

Another idea is to shoot the same places (streets, corners, markets) at different times throughout the day, evening, and night. Passage of time, different uses/usage from moment to moment, emphasizing traffic and people.

A third idea is to shoot consecutively from corner to corner, or street to street. Up/down Broadway, Fifth, Madison, Park ... or lesser-known streets.

It doesn't matter if something has been done before; by that rubric nothing is fair game at this point. So long as you aren't literally copying another photographer's work, it will be your own take on an idea. I like both the subway portraits and empty stations at night ideas. Both have plenty of room for the project to shift and grow. Maybe consider combining these two projects, the one might strengthen the other and vice versa.

I'm thinking about the subway. Maybe 'subway portraits', though that's been done a lot. Or maybe empty stations at night; I was out late last night and liked the desolate look of things. Perhaps just subway platform benches.
